My wife and I, both products of Bainbridge Island’s esteemed public school system, have a deep-rooted connection to the educational fabric of this community. Now, as our children navigate through the same system, we are once again intimately engaged with the schools that continue to be recognized among the finest in Washington State. It’s clear that Bainbridge Island understands the necessity for diverse educational pathways, offering tailored options for the distinct needs of each student. Drawing from our personal journey through Bainbridge Island’s reputable schools, this guide is written with the hope of providing you with a clear understanding of the educational options available, enabling you to make the best decision for your child’s academic future.

From its intimate public school settings known for academic excellence to alternative education like private Waldorf schools and robust homeschooling networks, there’s something for every learner.

Public Education Overview

The Bainbridge Island Public School System is committed to providing top-tier education, noted for its small class sizes and excellent student-to-teacher ratios. The district prides itself on its highly qualified educators and the students’ impressive performance in statewide assessments.

Elementary education is distributed among three schools:

Ordway Elementary for Central Bainbridge Island.

Blakely Elementary serving the South.

x̌alilc (Halilts) Elementary for the North.

The boundaries of the school districts, which determine your assigned elementary school, change annually. This adjustment is based on the population shifts of kindergarten to 4th-grade students in each neighborhood. Below is a general map of the school districts. Your assigned district is likely to change only if you live near the border, or “swing district.” Elementary schools strive to keep children in the same school throughout their early education, though it is not unheard of for a child to be transferred after a year or two. If a child has been attending a school for three years or more, the district makes a stronger effort to keep them enrolled to maintain their established familiarity.

  • Dark green = x̌alilc
  • Brown = Ordway
  • Light green = Blakely

As children advance to fifth and sixth grade, they transition to Sakai Intermediate School. Woodward Middle School takes on seventh and eighth graders. Bainbridge Island High School completes the K-12 journey, providing comprehensive education for ninth through twelfth grade. Alternative programs like the Odyssey Multi-age Program, Eagle Harbor High School, and the Commodore Options Home School Program are also available for varied learning experiences. Visit the Bainbridge Island School District’s official website for detailed information on school calendars and activities.
